Position Description

The Quality Engineer reports to the Plant Manager and is responsible for ensuring the Plant Quality Management System requirements are implemented, maintained, and continually improving.Assist the team to develop and deploy the plant Management System and ensure its alignment with the Modine Global Management System. Report on the Management System status, recommend and implement on-going improvements. Help to define, execute and improve processes owned by the Quality Department. Manage and lead the development of the Quality Specialist and Process Technician.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Development:

  • Understand and practice Modine Values. Identify and collect internal knowledge, best practices, and lessons learned experiences, then apply this knowledge in new situations and processes
  • Prevent shipment of non-conforming products
  • Work with the Plant Manager to develop and implement personal Annual Performance Objectivesthat support the organization's strategic objectives
  • Manage the performance and development of the Quality Specialist and Process Technician

Communication:

  • Ensure the Management System is documented, accessible throughout the plant, and effectively and efficiently implemented and maintained
  • Schedule and conduct refresher, and update training as changes are implemented to the plant Management System
  • Use quality management tools such as scorecards, management reviews, internal audits (product/process/system), feedback from internal and external customers, warranty data, and process reviews to evaluate Management System effectiveness. Initiate corrective/preventive action when appropriate
  • Interface with external customers and suppliers on quality-related issues.
  • Oversee PPAP requirements are completed per customer specification and are properly documented

Quality Management System & Process Control

  • Become subject matter expert on the Modine Management System and customer requirements and work with others to ensure compliance
  • Assist with the development of Work Instructions for quality and production personnel to insure they support quality requirements. Participate in APQP activity as assigned, including: Coordinate the introduction of new or changed processes and products. This includes establishing timing plans, assisting with D&P FMEA development, and Control Plan development, Measurement Systems Analysis, Process capability determination, Inspection procedure & dimensional layout technique development, Design or specify inspection and testing equipment, Reaction plan development
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the plant gage calibration program
  • Design, install, and evaluate quality process sampling systems, procedures, and appropriate statistical techniques
  • Review newly introduced and changed Specifications and revise plant quality requirements to reflect the new or changed requirements
  • Establish, monitor, analyze, and report on the major quality indicators for the plant. Utilize accepted capability indicators (CP, Cpk, PPM, etc.)
  • Coordinate the plant-wide corrective and preventive action and problem resolution of customer complaints

Statistical Methods:

  • Conduct statistical process capability studies on new or re-worked tooling, manufacturing equipment, and new or changed processes.
  • Identify, develop, schedule, and conduct training classes for basic and advanced statistical methods, quality system concepts, and quality tools. Examples include "8D Team Oriented Problem Solving, Six Sigma, and Statistical Problem Solving among others

Continuous Improvement:

  • Become familiar with the Modine Operating System / Lean Simplification
  • Support activity to define and share status of key performance indicators and lead/participate in process improvement and problem solving

Auditing:

  • Conduct internal audits of products, processes, and systems, identify and follow-up on areas for improvement, and assist with the implementation and follow-up of corrective action
  • Coordinate and direct the preparation for customer, third-party, and corporate quality system audits. Participate in the audits and represent the plant as necessary
Required Education & Qualifications
  • 3+ years of quality engineering experience
  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university; and/or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of standard quality practices, ex. FMEA, SPC, DOE, etc.
  • Solid working knowledge of APQP and PPAP processes.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced team environment.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • Root cause problem solving ability.
  • Familiar with lean manufacturing concepts.
  • Good working skills with Microsoft and Minitab software.
  • Ability to read and write in English and perform mathematical calculations.
